mindset + intuition in business: why they matter.
When people ask me … how did you make it this far as a business owner? They’re usually surprised by my response.
Because it’s not some secret strategy for getting clients. Or some fancy sales trick for consult calls. And it’s not necessarily related to the relationships I have in the industry.
It’s deeper than that.
And it’s something every wildly successful person busts their butt to master as a human.
It’s all about having a healthy mindset and being connected to your intuition.
Now, these two things may sound pretty esoteric in a world where strategy, data, and money are central to our existence.
However, you truly can’t do heart-centered work without them.
I’ll explain.
First of all, from a mindset perspective, if I didn’t believe I was a good writer or that I was capable of delivering great work to my clients, then I wouldn’t have succeeded at writing copy for many entrepreneurs, small businesses, and brands.
If I didn’t have the mindfulness tools to manage stress and pull myself out of self-doubt, then I would be stuck in a state of constant fear and never be able to access my creativity on a deep level. Not to mention, I’d completely repel clients.
And then there’s intuition. I thank my lucky stars that I’ve learned not only how to tap into this part of myself, but to also TRUST it. It has saved me time and time again.
For example, when I was first starting out as a freelance consultant and part-time health coach in 2014, I had no intention of becoming a copywriter. Yet, all of the opportunity, all of the clients, and all of the abundance kept arriving from that form of work.
My mind was set on being a super successful health coach because I believed that’s what I was meant to do. However, a part of me felt called to trust the copywriting work and to just see how it went.
Choosing the latter was the best decision I ever made. And truly a dream come true because I wanted to be a writer ever since I was a little kid. I didn’t even think is was possible until it was presented to me just a few years ago as a very real way to love what I do and make a living.
The other piece of trusting my intuition has been in my work with clients. When it comes to making big decisions or saying yes to new clients, I started to tap into my body to find the answers. If things felt good, I’d go for it. And if things felt “iffy,” I’d turn them down.
Now, there were a few times I didn’t listen to my intuition and took on some not-so-great projects and equally not-so-great clients. Those scenarios taught me a TON, and I’m grateful that I experienced them early on.
They were proof that trusting myself from the get-go is the best way to avoid headaches in the future. And while you may be thinking that’s not an option for someone just starting out as a business owner, I encourage you not to take on projects that feel like a full-bodied “no.” Trust me on that one!
When we become a master of our mindsets and our intuition, we are always connected to our truth and our purpose on this planet. We are allowing ourselves to be powerfully guided to the perfect next step.
I believe that when we tap into this part of ourselves, everything falls into place. I’ve experienced it for myself, and so have other entrepreneurs that I admire.
So if there’s one thing you should be investing in, spending time doing, and making a priority, it’s doing the work to let go of your fears, your doubts, your anger and attachments to the past.
Clear yourself of old wounds and limiting beliefs. Because when you do, you will be building your business from the purest level possible, and you’ll be doing your work from the core of your being: your soul.
If you’re wondering how to go about this, here are some things highly recommend.
- Meditate for at least 10 minutes every morning.
- Journal about how you want your day to go; what do you want to happen? how do you want to feel?
- Ask the universe for support whether that’s calling in new clients or to help you clear our worry.
- Tune into your body as much as possible throughout the day so that you can become familiar with the feelings and sensations that are triggered by clients or opportunities. Does it feel exciting or heavy?
- Go on annual retreats with other self-aware entrepreneurs so that you can learn from each other as you grow and evolve as humans and business owners.
- Choose to let go of fear over and over again. Fear is only going to block you from getting what you want.
- Trust the process. Ups and downs are normal. When you first start out, you may have an epic month, but then the following it’s crickets. This is ok, just go with the flow and do your best to stay positive and in tune with the actions your instincts are telling you to take. That could be going to a networking event or following up with a new business contact.
- Be kind to yourself. It’s not easy running a business, so find a way to have compassion for yourself along the way. You’re brave to be chasing your dream, so remind yourself of that when things feel crappy.
Truly, this is what I owe my success to. Yes, I have the skills to write and to help people find clarity. Yes, I have great relationships. Yes, I have a passion for what I do. But I’d be nothing without the inner work I’ve done to take all of this business stuff in stride.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. If you’re just starting out or you’ve been at it as an entrepreneur for a while now, tell me what you think has been most instrumental in your success so far.
Great advice Blair!! Thanks for writing it (and for following your intuition into copywriting). Putting these tips on my cork board post haste! Nikki
Yay! So happy this resonated with you 🙂 Big hug!
