feeling lost? try this to get clarity.
Remember the old days of waking up the company of a sweet, little… flip phone?
There were no startling emails to read from your boss, no Instagram or Facebook feeds to scroll through, and nothing to pull you into the rabbit hole of “compare and despair” before you even lifted your head off the pillow.
There was space to breathe and be present, to actually make your coffee without also sending a hurried email to a colleague or posting a daily photo to social media. There was freedom to just be grounded in reality and in your own life.
It’s hard to believe that was just a mere 6 or 7 years ago.
Now, we all wake up to notifications that demand our immediate attention and pull us away from the present moment. Because our iPhones own us.
We’ve gotten into the habit of waking up and diving into all of the updates as if there is immediate fomo to quench the moment we regain consciousness.
And as we slide our fingers along the screen, we’re filled emotions and thoughts that often pull our precious energy down.
You suddenly feel …
…jealous because your friend has more Instagram followers than you.
…saddened that you weren’t invited to a cool event that everyone is now raving about.
…bothered that your life doesn’t look as gorgeous, put together, and fun as someone else’s.
We carry that built up angst with us throughout the day as we mindlessly check our phones to pass the time on the elevator, on the subway, in line at Starbucks, and during a dull meeting.
The moments that used to be spacious and open for new thoughts and ideas to pop into our minds are now occupied all of the time.
It’s no wonder clarity is a hard thing to come by in life. Whether that’s a simple decision about what to eat for dinner or what direction to choose for your business.
When it comes to being a budding entrepreneur, finding it can feel particularly impossible. Especially when there are so many options and successful people to follow on social media.
If you’re a health coach or wellness entrepreneur in the throws of making important decisions about things like…
- Your specialty and focus
- Your target audience
- Your packages
- Your website design
- And more…
And you’re torn between ideas and inspiration, worries of excluding people, worries of not making the right choices…
It’s time to put down the iPhone, press pause, and go inward.
Put what other entrepreneurs are doing out of your mind. Put the pressure to rush and keep up aside. And consider what would make YOU really happy.
Here’s the best way to approach this:
- Schedule weekly “clarity time” in your calendar
- Put your phone on airplane mode
- Grab a pretty journal and pen
- Sit in a cozy, quiet spot
- Write down all of your ideas, see it all on paper
- Write out your fears and worries, see them all on paper
- And take a step back, take some deep breaths, and read what you’ve written
- Highlight the ideas that make you really excited, the ones that feel light, not heavy or complicated
- Feel into them, don’t analyze them
This isn’t about writing a pros and cons list; this is about using your body to help you make important business decisions.
Think less, feel more.
When you’re able to feel into your options and choices, you will have the power to fine-tune your gut instincts. And when you fine-tune your gut instincts, you’ll intuitively know which choice is best for you right now.
While this may feel a little unnatural at first, spending time strengthening your intuitive muscle every day will help.
Connect with it in the moments where you’re commuting, shopping, or traveling instead of reaching for your phone to distract you, and use it to guide you in everyday decision making.
Like …
- Which restaurant should I order from?
- Which rug should I buy for my apartment?
- Which outfit should I wear to an event?
Simply feel into the answer instead of doing a mental analysis. See your options in your mind’s eye, and notice which one makes you feel the most excited, at ease, and strong. Also, notice what makes you feel stressed so you can get familiar with the contrast that lives inside of you.
Hint: always choose what feels lighter and more exciting.
This is an exercise that will help you continue to narrow things down and clear out the ideas and options that don’t feel good. It’s what ultimately empowers you to arrive at the perfect next step.
When it doubt, go inward. Disconnect from the outer world to explore the wisdom of your inner world.
